*Under California state law, any person doing work in your home exceeding $500 must be a CA licensed contractor for that type of work or working for a CA licensed contractor.
**Under California state law, any person doing electrical work for an Electrical Contractor must be either the contractor them self or must carry either a journeyman's card ( to work alone ) or an apprentice card and must be supervised at all times. That persons name should be on this list http://www.dir.ca.gov/DAS/CA_Electricians_Certified.pdf
How to check out a contractor for Licensing, Complaints, & workman's comp Insurance
Step 1. Under California State law anyone employed by a contractor, said contractor must have workman's compensation Insurance and you can verify this information with the state of California by phone 1-800-321-CSLB (2752) or online http://www.cslb.ca.gov
Step 2. You will see a series of choices the top right says, "Check a License or HIS Registration" click it.
Step 3. Choose to input either the license number, name of company, or name of contractor.
Step 4. You will then have a page that shows some information. Near the middle and to the left on some contractors will have complaint info "Click here for Complaint Disclosure information." No complaint info means no complaints. If you see complaint info it may be wise to steer clear.
Step 5.
Near the bottom has "workman's compensation history." It should show that they carry workman's compensation insurance at all times including the present time! It may not be prudent for you to hire someone who does not have workman's comp insurance shown here.
Step 6.
At the bottom you will find a small box with "Personnel List" and sometimes "Salesperson List" next to that. The Personnel list shows who is actually the Licensee. Don't let anyone fool you and say that they are using someone else's license. By California State law you cannot share or use someone else's license. That would be similar to lending your CA Drivers License to someone. ( Its against the law and it's fraudulent ) The "Salesperson List" is for anyone who enters a contract with you for the company who is not the contractor them self. |
